The COVID-19 pandemic has had devastating recent effects on franchise businesses in the United States. A recent International Franchise Association (IFA) survey found that three in four franchises were fully closed because of the pandemic. However, as we look forward and franchise systems begin to reopen under state and local protocols, the IFA has released a comprehensive blueprint to guide businesses in their recovery.
Safety and economic stability are top themes of the plan. Industry-wide recommendations include guidance for employee and customer wellbeing, with more detailed plans provided by sector: automotive, commercial cleaning services, education, fitness, hotels, residential services, restaurants, personal care, and senior care.
The Franchise Reopening Blueprint also includes an outline of pro-growth legislative recommendations aimed at returning businesses to pre-pandemic levels of profitability and saving as many jobs as possible. These recommendations, which include developing an American Recovery Fund, extending and improving the Paycheck Protection Program, and increased liability protections for businesses, have already been delivered to the White House, members of Congress, and governors and mayors across the nation.
While franchise businesses have adjusted to the new “normal”, Robert Cresanti, IFA President & CEO reminds us that franchises are “uniquely suited to help lead the country’s economic revival.” The IFA remains resolute in its mission to protect, promote, and enhance franchising.
